Learn about the basics and origin of the Fairies, Legends and the different types of Fairies, their role in magic and much more.
What are Fairies? Most people think of fairies as tiny creatures, flitting about on gossamer wings, waving a magic wand and children most certainly want a little gift from the tooth fairy. Be prepared because history and folklore tell a different tale.
Once upon a time the belief in fairies was very common but most people didn’t like to mention them by name. They came up with names like the Little People or the Hidden People. Sounds a little bit like “You-Know-Who” or “They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” what most characters in Harry Potter did rather than saying Lord Voldemorts name aloud.
Over the centuries many explanations have been given for a belief in fairies. There are those who say that they are like ghosts, spirits of the dead, or were fallen angels, neither bad enough for Hell nor good enough for Heaven.
Nowadays you can find hundreds of books from all over the world and many books describe different kinds of fairies – some are minute creatures, others grotesque – some can fly, and all can appear and disappear at will.
The oldest fairies on record for example in England were first described by the historian Gervase of Tilbury in the 13th century.
