How Biofeedback can help you with your Back Pain

How biofeedback can help you with your back pain

Biofeedback is an alternative medicine technique that helps you identify patterns in your brain waves in response to pain.

Once you recognize those brainwaves, you are then, theoretically, capable of altering or controlling some of the waves. By doing this, you should be able to reduce your back pain.

When biofeedback was first introduced into alternative medicine it was used to control things such as skin temperature, muscle tension, and heart rate.

During a biofeedback session, you will have electrodes connecting you and the machine. There will be a visual stimulus that changes as you learn to control your brain waves.

Controlling pain is different than a heartbeat or temperature because pain has different levels associated with it. The four levels are:

Core Response- The brain’s announcement of injury or discomfort.

Awareness- Your cognitive recognition of a physiological response. The brain can amplify pain many times over to grab your attention.

Emotions- Your worries based on the experiencebof pain. Caring for children, working, etc. are all worries. This can further amplify the pain.

Social- How is your pain affecting others? This level can amplify your perceived pain.

In biofeedback, all four levels are attacked at once. By learning to control these waves, a person can begin to get rid of the last three stages. Once those are gone, the first is attacked again.

When choosing a practitioner, you should look for three things.

-The doctor should be certified by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America.

-The practitioner should have many years of experience.

-The practitioner should have a diverse background as a health practitioner.

Mild back pain can take around fifteen sessions. Chronic can take as many as seventy, so make sure you are comfortable with the practitioner you choose.

Biofeedback is one of your more costly alternative health options. The median range is around $500 for an initial consult, and $150 per hour session.

When choosing a specialist do your research, find out who has the most experience, and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions.

Between the cost and the outcome, its worth the time spent to find the
practitioner that will work best for you.

Biofeedback has not been scientifically proven to work for everyone but has a positive momentum behind it.
